St. Mark’s Refugee Sponsorship Update…
“In the face of the tragedy of tens of thousands of refugees fleeing
death in war or hunger, and who are on the road to hope of life,
the Gospel calls us, asks us to be near, the littlest and the abandoned.”
(Pope Francis, September 2015)
JAN. 10, 2016: St. Mark’s Refugee Sponsorship Committee voted in favour of sponsoring a family from Syria through the Blended Visa Office-Referred Program (BVOR) with Citizenship and Immigration Canada. To support a family of six, we endeavoured to raise $30,000 by the end of February 2016 to fulfil various obligations (as required by the Diocese of Hamilton). Our application for sponsorship through the Diocese could only proceed when all funds were in place.
FEB. 14: We are pleased to report that we have surpassed our fundraising goal! Many thanks for your generosity and support!!
FEB. 29: The Diocese confirmed receipt of St. Mark’s sponsorship application — it’s official! St. Mark’s is now 2nd in line to be matched with a potential family. This process will still require several weeks, maybe more, to move ahead. Please stay tuned!
JUNE 2016: Through the Diocese of Hamilton, St. Mark’s has been matched with a Syrian family of 6, expected to arrive in Canada in July. We look forward to welcoming them to our community! Our Furniture and household donation drive is coming to a close! If you selected an item from the dollhouse display, please bring it to St. Mark’s this weekend (drop it off at the display, in the Narthex). For larger size items, please call Fiona Kangaloo at 226-808-4719 or email email@example.com to arrange for pick up. Thank you for your continued support and prayers as we prepare to welcome this family!
OCT. 2016: Our new Canadians arrived in Canada from Lebanon on Monday, September 19 and, already, many good things have happened. In addition to helping them get to know their new neighbourhood, members of our sponsorship committee have been helping the family with school enrolment, shopping, language assessment meetings, getting library cards, planning upcoming outings (they love swimming!), and much more. We’ve had a few bumps along the way (such as occasional language barriers) but so far, so good. It will take time for the family to settle; we’ll do our best to help. Again, on behalf of St. Mark’s Sponsorship Committee, many thanks for your prayers, support and generosity.
